You got that right. 0-10 under B.I.,and folks were calling for the man's head (although he had been a winner his whole life). Rome wasn't built in a day,and it takes some time to get system in place, and get the kind of kids you want playing. Give Matt some time, and he'll make a force to be reckoned with at Coeburn.

Wouldn't all of this be akin to rearranging the deck furniture on the Titanic, Coeburn has never been too good at football and if the coaches want to move everyone what's the big deal kids are resilient in a few weeks they want even care they will be playing basketball anyway. My son has played seven different positions in four years, and he's just fine so if you need to move players around to win so be it. Relax it'll be o.k.

Just out of curiosity, what pressure are you under in regards to who starts/doesn't start on a high school football team?

    Re: Coeburn Changes

I'll jump in here. I don't know how good the little league/feeder system is in Pound. One thing you'll notice on successful areas is they build from the bottom of up. That's not done by winning in little league but trying to teach them basic football technique and things that they will do later. Take a Karate Kid moment here, and you learn and get better at some by repetition. You run 44-I from little league on you run it pretty well by the time you get to high school. You run Blue Knight Rumble it may work but when you start calling things different names, you slow that comfort level. When the excitement and nerves go, you increase the chances of just blown calls. It's a new coach, at least mostly new staff I think, and probably a lot of new to the system as a whole. Give it some time. A coaching change doesn't normally make an impact at best till season 2 as far as the skill. Moving kids around seems logical as they probably came in and everybody told them where they played, and now the coaches are figuring where they should play. I think the popular one I heard, a few years back, new coach, asked how many people played QB and about 10 people thought they were. The 4'7 guy that weighed 275 thought he could be a wideout. You would be amazed at how many kids haven't been told that maybe they need to find a better fit. People say its terrible to tell a kid they can't do something but sometimes you need to tell a kid that they might be able to do something else better. Some of the best surprises that I know we have had over the years was kids who you knew wanted to play, had skill but didn't fit in the spot they had wanted to play, but was more than willing to listen to coaches, move to a new spot and try to master it. A few all district players came out of that. The coaches aren't spending their time out there trying to lose. They don't break down film, sit there at practices, etc with the purpose of losing. Some may not be great at it but I think any of them would want to win.

In high school sports, team morale is huge. And if there is a problem with a player being there that causes a problem, the coach should have spoken to the seniors or team leaders and discussed it. Most of the time, the players want to win and if they feel like a player will help them win, they give a lot, unless the player has let them down before. The ones who tend to not want to give second chances are the kids who probably see their playing time diminish.

One of the worst things around here though is some of the parents who want to see their kids in there so bad that they cause more team division than anything the coaches do. Problem is they can see the coaches do it but will never see what they do.
What we've got here is failure to communicate. Some men you just can't reach, so you get what we had here last week which is the way he wants it. Well, he gets it.

I take it you don't remember when Coeburn had a good football team. The Coeburn teams I played where pretty darn gone good. The only reason they didn't make it a good way in the playoffs is because the had to play the power house teams that PV had in 89 and 90. If it wasn't for those PV teams Coeburn would have made it a lot futher in the playoffs.

From about '85-'95 only missed the playoffs once I believe, and finished either 2nd or 3rd in the district all those years with PV and Appy.

    Re: Coeburn Changes

Your right about Richards. In my opinion the 89 & 90 PV teams where the best of any of the state title teams from around here. If my memory is right Coeburn gave both of those teams a pretty good game.

    Re: Coeburn Changes

Put your behind in the past people, Coeburn used to be good, I musta missed those two good years. The qb on my sons high school team is terrible, he is 5'6 weighs 140 can't throw the ball thirty yards his backup is 6'3 215 and can throw the ball 60 yards and no amount of "pressure" from parents can change the fact that the coach is the coach for a reason. It is still just Coeburn and to win somethings must change sometimes. Just be glad your kids get to participate because on day they will be old and setting around a computer
    writing about it like us.
